Music: Bo Lee Da: Freakporn

Our Take

Bo Lee Da’s album Freakporn is an extremely strange journey through some tripped out psychedelic rock and experimentation. Offering a lengthy album that jumps between trippy acid rock, epic progressive tracks and even some purely experimental songs Freakporn is not an easy release to jump right into. But given some time this strangely named CD will reveal itself to be an amazingly diverse listen that demands your full attention.

Right from the start of this album, it becomes clear that this isn’t going to be your average listen. Bo Lee Da often jumps between the seemingly normal and completely bizarre, but unlike some experimental groups always stays within the realm of being listenable. Whether offering mellow indie rock/fuzzed out psychedelic rock or jumping into a lengthy instrumental track there are always new sounds to be found on this album. Because of that it isn’t a release that will initially reveal its complexities to the listener, but it will certainly keep them coming back.

Though the vocals are not the primary focus of Freakporn, when there is singing it fits the music well. For the most part Bo Lee Da has only decided to include vocals on the more traditional psychedelic and indie rock songs, adding in slightly washed out singing that is very melodic but also slightly hard to understand. However, whether or not you can understand the lyrics or not it never feels as if the vocals were tacked on and the album does benefit from including them.

This group and album are completely bizarre in many ways, but if experimental music and psychedelic rock are your forte this is a release that you really shouldn’t miss out on. Freakporn will take some time to truly comprehend thanks to its numerous styles and complexities, but it’s also one of the better experimental albums I’ve heard in quite some time. Bo Lee Da is truly a gem, and the underground will hopefully regard it as a classic down the road.
