Dead Rising 3: Operation Broken Eagle DLC (Xbox One)

While we had great things to say about Dead Rising 3, its two DLC’s (to date) have been less than stellar. Operation Broken Eagle puts you in the boots of Special Forces Commander Adam Kane as he attempts to track down the President inside Los Perdidos. While these Untold Stories missions give a nice side-story to the events you played through in the main campaign, the overall substance leaves a lot to be desired. If you play through just the main missions, you can beat it in about an hour. If you’re looking to 100% each DLC, you’ll probably only have to put another hour or two into it.

While I had fun with the main story missions (as simplistic as they were), the side missions just felt a bit too tedious. 2/3 of the length of the DLC is just spent running across the map picking up an unnecessary amount of collectables that don’t help the story at all. While this was fun during the main campaign of the game (namely because crazy weapons and/or perks would come from them), nothing was gained from these.

While the story is meant to focus on these Untold Stories, I never felt like I was really learning anything about what happened behind the scenes. So far, through two DLC’s, we’ve learned very little about the characters we’re introduced to. Yes, we get five new weapons, one new combo weapon, one new vehicle and one new costume, I can’t say I’m not disappointed by the scope of the DLC as a whole. The lack off co-op for the DLC is also a major pitfall too.

If you were a big fan of the game, you will probably enjoy the DLC enough to justify it’s $10 price ($30 for the season pass), but if you’re lukewarm on purchasing it, I’d hold off and see if it improves with the later installments.

The Good

+ Main story is decent.

+ Great new weapons/vehicle.

The Bad

- Too short to justify the price tag.

- Tedious side missions.

- Lack of co-op.
