Dead Rising 3: Operation Fallen Angel DLC (Xbox One)

As I said in our review of the last chunk of Dead Rising 3 DLC – Operation Broken Eagle – the DLC does not live up to the lofty expectations that came from how good the main game was. Like the last DLC, this is a continuation of the Untold Stories of Los Perdidos. This time, you play as wise cracking alcohol-abused Angel Quijano. Angel is part of Red’s illegal gang that you meet a few chapters into the main story campaign.

Along with her partner “Dougie” (which the writers made painfully clear that he doesn’t like to be called), Angel is sent out to scavenge for food, other supplies and survivors. And, well, that’s pretty much it.

While it was a nice change of pace for both DLC’s to not force you into feeling the annoying rush of the in-game clock, you’re still constantly nagged by Doug to meet him at whichever asinine objective he marks on your map. Hearing “Angel, hurry up and meet me at the communications tower” every five minutes while you’re attempting to complete the already obnoxiously tedious side missions just makes the game feel more like a hindrance than immersive fun.

So far we’re half way through the season pass content for Dead Rising 3 and while Operation Fallen Angel was a minor step up from Operation Broken Eagle, it doesn’t look like things are going to be improving that much for fans of Dead Rising 3. It’s hard for me to wrap my head around how Capcom managed to make such a fantastic world in Los Perdidos and then systematically strip it of all of its charm for its DLC. Hopefully part three will be a major step up, but don’t get your hopes up too high.

The Good

+ Angel has substantially more character than Kane.

+ New weapon is awesome.

The Bad

- Lack of co-op. Still.

- Lacks imagination.

- Terrible mission checkpoints.

- Constant reminders that there's a main mission to finish.

- Tedious busy work.
