Mazes will release their new album Wooden Aquarium on September 9th via Fat Cat. The band has released the song “Salford” which you can stream below. It’s a fairly short song but accomplishes a lot in the two minute run time, as the band comes in with catchy indie rock that has a slightly rougher edge to it. The parts where the guitars break free and take over had me hooked, and I’ve already gone back to this track multiple times. Check out additional details below.

Completed in just two weeks between the sub-zero conditions of commuter town Cornwall, New York and the heart of Brooklyn, Wooden Aquarium marks the apex at which Mazes’ music to date meets. Recorded completely live and laid down entirely onto beautifully thick two-inch tape, the trio also had company in enlisting the skills of Parquet Courts’ producer Jonathan Schenke.

There’s a sense of nostalgia on Wooden Aquarium that expands into a theme of finding yourself caught between two places. Akin to Field Music’s articulate songwriting prowess and the punky guitar rhythms of The Feelies or Television, the album tackles unfinished moments, half notes, things left unsaid and personal ailments; see-sawing between extreme confidence and self doubt they are explored through hypnotic lo-fi pop melodies of motorik rhythms bolstered by spiky hooks and Cooper’s distinctively carefree vocals.
