Indie pop/rock band Wild Moccasins has been handpicked by Of Montreal to come along for their U.S. tour. The three week run will start May 3rd and make its way around the country in all the major markets. The group is also hard at work on their sophomore effort, which will be a follow-up to 2010’s Skin Collision Past (re-released by New West Records in 2011). I found the debut to be quite enjoyable when I reviewed it back in 2010 (check out the review here) so it will be exciting to see how the group has continued to grow. They also released a limited edition 7-inch with a new song “Gag Reflections” and a cover of The B-52’s “Summer of Love” last year.

LOS ANGELES, CA, April 10, 2013 – Houston indie pop darlings Wild Moccasins have been handpicked by of Montreal as main support for their U.S. spring tour. The two bands, who previously played together last year, will kick off the three-week run in Miami on May 3 and hit New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Austin, Portland and other major markets along the way.

Wild Moccasins have earned a reputation as one of Houston’s most exciting young bands on the strength of their exuberant live show and incredibly infectious tunes. They have amassed a devoted following, sold out shows across the city and garnered glowing press. “Wild Moccasins easily put on Houston’s best stage show gig after gig,” exclaimed Houston Press. “Simply put, no other band in town that we can think of has so much fun playing together.” The quintet, led by vocalist/keyboardist Zahira Gutierrez and vocalist/guitarist Cody Swann, and featuring guitarist Andrew Lee, bassist Nicholas Cody and drummer John Baldwin, have developed into a formidable live band as a result of extensive touring in the U.S. and Europe, where they played 35 shows in a breakneck 40 days. The group has performed at CMJ, SXSW, toured with Saturday Looks Good To Me and shared the stage with bands like of Montreal, The Thermals, Tilly and the Wall, Ducktails and Yip Deceiver to name just a few.

Wild Moccasins are currently in the studio in Houston with producer Kevin Ryan working on their sophomore LP, the follow up to the acclaimed Skin Collision Past, which was originally self-released by the band in 2010 and re-released by New West Records in 2011 as a deluxe edition that also included their six-song debut EP, Microscopic Metronomes. Drawing comparisons to Rilo Kiley, New Pornographers, Belle and Sebastian, and Sarah Records’ catalog, the band’s debut combined the sweet vocal interplay of Gutierrez and Swann over taut and jaunty guitars, bouncy bass lines, clacking drums and blippy keyboards, resulting in an effervescent, dancey mix of jangly indie pop.

The band’s newest song, “Gag Reflections” released last year as a limited edition 7-inch complete with a cover of The B-52’s classic “Summer Of Love,” is easily one of Wild Moccasins’ strongest releases to date. Built around a searing guitar riff, rumbling bass, propulsive drumming and Gutierrez’s soaring, yet yearning vocals, the song gives a glimpse into where the band is headed with their forthcoming sophomore album.
