B.O.R.: No Good Deed Debuts Number One

NO-GOOD-DEED

The Idris Elba thriller No Good Deed opened number one at the weekend box office, finishing with an estimated $24.5 million.  No Good Deed was able to bump Guardians of the Galaxy from the top spot which has be been finishing first at the box office with the limited competition from opening movies.  Guardians went on to finish the weekend at number three bringing in an estimated $8 million and is the only movie of 2014 which has crossed the $300 million mark domestically.

Fellow newcomer Dolphin Tale 2 opened with $16.6 million.  The film stars Ashley Judd, Harry Connick Jr., and Morgan Freeman, which tells the story of a prosthetic-tailed dolphins and the human handlers.  In 2011 the original Dolphin Tale opened with $19.1 million and finished with $72.2 million domestically.

Opening on just 809 screens, James Gandolfini’s final performance in The Drop opened above expectations, earning $4.2 million.  The film co-stars Tom Hardy and Noomi Rapace, and currently is sitting strong with critics (88% on Rotten Tomatoes).
