In a season filled with blockbuster after blockbuster, occasionally a movie like The Fault in Our Stars slips in and makes a killing at the box office. The Fault in Our Stars opened number one, with an estimated $48.2 million. Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgot star in this young-adult tale about a sixteen-year old cancer patient who is forced to go-out, and ends up falling in love.
The excellent Tom Cruise/Emily Blunt sci-fi movie Edge of Tomorrow struggled a bit, earning only $29.5 million, finishing third, and yet another disappointing sci-fi epic. Edge of Tomorrow was incredibly well-received, but failed to make a huge impact its first week at the box office.
Last weeks champ in Disney’s Maleficent finished second with $33.5 million. The film has now earned $127.4 million, and may finish with around $200 million domestically.
In fourth was X-Men: Days of Future Past, making $14.7 million, bringing its total to $189.1 million, and should finish with around $220 million.
Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West brought in $7.2 million, and has so-far only earned $30.1 million, extremely disappointing when compared to previous success.
