Disney’s live action re-interpretation of Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent, finished number one, bumping last week’s champ X-Men: Days of Future Past to the second spot.  Maleficent earned $70 million domestically in its opening weekend, and added another $100 million overseas.  Great numbers when compared to other recent Disney live-action outings, and a good sign with two new re-interpretations in production (Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella and Jon Favreau’s Jungle Book in 2015).

Last week’s champ X-Men: Days of Future Past dropped a whopping 64 percent, finishing its second weekend with $32.6 million ($162.1 million total).  While their were two new wide-releases, it’s still surprising to see DoFP drop so drastically in its second weekend.  Luckily it has made a great deal overseas, but still may come shorter than original estimates had guessed.

Finishing third was Seth MacFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West, which flopped with a disappointing $17.1 million.  This is significantly lower than his big-screen debut Ted ($54 million debut in 2012).  MacFarlane’s film had the star power and promise, but ultimately underwhelmed both critically and commercially.

Godzilla finished fourth with $12.2 million, which brings its domestic total to $174.7 million, and should ultimately finish with around $200 million.  Godzilla has done well overseas, and already has a sequel green lit.

Finishing fifth was the Adam Sandler ROM-COM Blended, which has a ten-day total of $29.6 million…. Who cares.

Still plugging away is the Seth Rogan/Zac Efron comedy Neighbors, which earned another $7.7 million, and is adding to its impressive $128.6 million run in the states.
