It’s been almost two decades since the Finnish metal band Apocalyptica started. Since then they’ve managed to break into the US mainstream market thanks to their 2007 release, Worlds Collide.

For those who are unfamiliar with Apocalyptica, they are a four-person band consisting of three cellists and one drummer. This makes for an interesting sound and live performance. All songs are instrumentals except for the select few that feature guest vocal appearances as well as the occasional guest instrumental. On Worlds Collide, it features a group of powerhouse collaborators including Slipknot/Stone Sour vocalist Corey Taylor lending guest vocals on “I’m Not Jesus”, Lacuna Coil’s Cristina Scabbia guesting on “”S.O.S. (Anything But Love)”and Three Days Grace singer Adam Gontier guesting on the hugely popular “I Don’t Care”.

It’s hard to imagine a band with 75% of its members playing the same instruments to be able to stay fresh, but Apocalyptica make it work. Worlds Collide is a phenomenal blend of musicianship and catchy songs. Some of the best songs on the album include the title track “Worlds Collide”, “I’m Not Jesus” and “Last Hope”. I’d give Worlds Collide a 9/10.

Worlds Collide is out now via Jive Records.
