I swear, at some point in time my review of every new Montreux DVD is simply going to say “Buy this DVD”. Eagle Rock continues to put out DVDs that have amazing performances from well known artists at Montreux, and they have continued this with a B.B. King set from 1993. King has been a regular at the Montreux Jazz Festival since first appearing there in 1979, but this DVD seems to be the first of his many sets there available for viewing audiences. And as one might expect, this release showcases King and his backing band at their best and make this a must have.

This release offers viewers with 99 minutes of B.B. King material spread out over 17 songs. For this particular performance, King had a backing band consisting of eight members. This is certainly a much larger group than some people may have seem him with but it works wonderfully, as he gives them ample opportunity to show off their musical prowess and soloing ability. But as you might expect, the focus of this set is often on B.B. King’s guitar playing and singing ability, as despite the fact that he was in his late 60’s at this time he still is just as good as a blues player as any of the younger people out there. Live At Montreux 1993 has plenty of classic songs but also highlights material from the album that was current at that time, Blues Summit. Viewers will likely find that this entire set is worth watching, and though there are no extras on this DVD the music itself makes this worth the price of admission. The picture quality is also great and the people that shot this performance clearly made an effort to showcase the band just as often as they showcased King.

Eagle Rock has once again demonstrated that they have access to some really great performances from past Montreux Festivals. B.B. King was still in top shape in 1993 and his set on this DVD showcases that, making this release a must have for fans of his music and blues in general. Seeing as he has been a part of Montreux for so long, one can only hope that there are more performances of this caliber waiting to be released, but for right now this is definitely a great starting point.
