Evile- Enter the Grave

Over the past week or so I’ve mentioned “old school” thrash in quite a few reviews, showcasing a sort of revival of the 1980’s thrash style. In this regard, Evile is probably what one would consider the ultimate thrash revival band. Originally founded as a Metallica cover band, the band’s debut Enter the Grave will immediately have listeners thinking of groups such as Metallica, Anthrax, and Slayer. Their sound may be extremely similar to many older bands, but Evile’s still managed to pull it off.

It’s strange when a group sounds like so many others but they’re still undeniably enjoyable to listen to. This is the case with Evile, as their riffs often sound straight out of an early Metallica or Slayer album yet will still appeal to many listeners. Perhaps it is because the band has such great energy that makes them sound as though they’re a veteran of the genre. All of the instrumental work is extremely fast and furious, and even though some people are likely to write off Evile as a rip off they are still likely to gain some dedicated fans.

Continuing on with the old school vibe, lead singer Oli Drake sounds like a cross between Metallica’s James Hetfield and Slayer’s Tom Araya. This means that he basically shouts with a bit of a rough edge, but all of his lyrics are understandable. One element that will immediately entice or alienate potential listeners would have to be the lyrical content. It is admittedly quite cheesy with lines such as “Fatal adrenaline rush, jump into the pit” and other violent and gore inspired lyrics. Though not the best vocalist on the market, Drake’s yells certainly get the job done.

Enter the Grave may be an album that will remind listeners of quite a few legendary bands, but this turns out to be a blessing in disguise. Despite the extremely similarity between Evile and bands such as Slayer and Metallica, their sound is so energetic and catchy that they will still appeal to many a thrash fan. If you’re looking for something new avoid this one, but if you want a nice throwback to a long gone time, this group is a good bet.
