Konung 2 (PC)

Hokay. At first, Konung 2 seems like a clone of Diablo. Not II, the first one. Movement is slow, sprites aren’t that great, and you get the occasional unnerving sound effect. If you play it for more than a few minutes, however, there the similarities end.

For one, Konung is set on historical Earth before the conversion of Scandinavia. Nordic warriors and shamans live side-by-side with Byzantine merchants and soldiers. Magic exists, but is being beaten down by the cruel Lord of the Woodland. But, the blood of the mighty Titan, an ancient warrior, king, and demigod, has awakened in six heroes. You follow the fate of one of these heroes throughout the game, and eventually attract more warriors to your side and win villages to your side against the sadistic Lord.

But, a word to the wise. If you’re expecting fast-paced slaying of foes, go play Diablo II. Discretion is truly the better part of valor. You do not valiantly set out and defeat your foes. That is for later. First, you must subtly grow, avoiding the Lord’s agents when they find you and…well…avoiding just about anything unfriendly. Combat is deadly at early levels and should be avoided at all costs. That being said, there areways to gain experience and cash. Transporting items for merchants is a nice, easy way to get experience and money, and it makes you explore as well, opening up new towns for you to explore.

The NPCs in Konung 2 are also better than most. Everyone has at least something to say, and most of the time it’s fairly relevant as well. The names also sound authentic for the cultures. The graphics are decent, not earth-shattering, but there wasn’t anything that made me cringe. Running is fairly difficult, and walking is very slow. This makes escape from the unavoidable battles difficult, but not impossible. Of course, running away from the two guards armed with crossbows isn’t the most exciting activity in the world, and healing is incredibly difficult. Potions of healing are hard to buy, as any merchant who carries them has roughly three low-strength ones that restore about three pixels of your life bar.

It’s a slow game, and its hard to make it past the first few minutes. After that, it starts getting interesting, as your merchant employers get you out to see the world. The world gradually involves you, until the real plot manifests. Its slow going, but worth it. Teh Naes out.
