The Used and Atreyu are currently touring together and writer/photographer Chip Tamplin had the chance to check out the show when it came to Baltimore. Check below for his impressions and photographs.

Atreyu has always been a band that impresses me both on CD and on stage. While their sound has evolved extensively over their last few albums, their live show has always remained consistent. With the evolution of their sound, they’ve garnered a lot of “haters” over the years. I can honestly not imagine anyone who could hate Atreyu after seeing one of their live shows. Alex Varkatzas blowing out eardrums with his screams, twin axe-men Travis Miguel and Dan Jacobs shredding people’s faces off, bassist Marc McKnight running back and forth on the stage and stroking his stylish moustache and drummer Brandon Saller keeping the beat and wowing the crowd with his melodic voice that compliments Alex’s. Starting off with a bang, they opened with “Stop! Before It’s too Late and We’ve Destroyed It All”, the first track off their new CD Congregation of the Damned. While the majority of the crowd was clearly there for The Used, Atreyu had few problems getting the crowd to sing along. Over the course of their 11-song set they threw in a fan-favorite that they haven’t played much over their last few tours in “Someone’s Standing on my Chest”. With adding this song they cut out some unlikely songs in “Right Side of the Bed” and “Ex’s and Oh’s”. Overall I was very pleased with their set list and the amount of energy that they consistently bring to any live show whether it’s a 25-minute set list at Warped Tour or an hour long headlining set. Atreyu never disappoints, and tonight was no exception.

Over the years Atreyu has gone from opening to headlining stages for Taste of Chaos, OZZfest and this summer’s edition of Mayhem Fest.

The Used:

I’ve had the opportunity to see The Used many times over the years; they’re normally a band that, to me, is also very consistent. Not tonight. Out of all the times I’ve seen them, they were their worst tonight. While some people will disagree with me on this, I felt they were very subpar compared to previous times I’d seen them. It was impossible to hear vocalist Bert McCracken and you couldn’t hear the guitar over the bass. While I applaud the crowd for out-singing Bert so I was actually able to figure out what song they were playing at the time, the simple fact of the matter is I pay to see the bands perform their songs, not the fans. While these technical issues affected my review of them for this show, how great they’ve been in the past leads me to believe that this was a fluke show and I just caught them on an off night. Even with the problems they still had a lot of energy and seeing all of DC’s 9:30 Club singing along was definitely a treat, as was The Useds set list. Opening their set with “Blood on My Hands”, the first single off their newest album Artwork, The Used played many other crowd pleasers spanning their entire catalogue including “The Taste of Ink”, “All That I’ve Got”, “Pretty Handsome Awkward”, a great acoustic performance of “On My Own” and ending with their signature song “A Box Full of Sharp Objects”. While I still felt disappointed by their performance at the end of the set, I hope my review does not discourage those who have not seen them live, from seeing them in the future.
