It was the “battle of the sequel” this weekend at the box office, with 22 Jump Street taking on How to Train Your Dragon 2 in the head-to-head matchup.  Bringing in a hugely impressive $60 million,  22 Jump Street finished first, in a weekend that most had already given to fellow newcomer How to Train Your Dragon 2.  Based on the 1980’s series that featured an actor named “something” Depp, the original 21 Jump Street movie earned $36.3 million, and eventually went on to gross $138.4 domestically.

The $60 million opening-wekend for 22 is the second largest R-rated comedy debut, with The Hangover II bringing in $85.7 million, and Seth MacFarlane‘s Ted in third all-time with $54.4 million (a number his new film A Million Ways to Die in the West won’t even finish with).

Everyone’s favorite to win this weekends box office, How to Train Your Dragon 2 finished second with an estimated $50 million, which still makes for a solid hit, and more than any other film this summer, should have some legs.

Maleficent added another $19 million to its now $163.5 million total.  Last weeks champ The Fault in Our Stars, to nobodies surprise took a huge dip, and finished with around $15 million ($81.7 million total).

Edge of Tomorrow continues to struggle, raking in $16 million, making its total a disappointing $56.6 million.  In its fourth week of release, X-Men: Days of Future Past finally crossed the $200 million mark, and has now earned $205.9 domestically.
