Ian Walsh- Please Remember

The packaging of Ian Walsh’s latest album, Please Remember, is a bit misleading. Looking at the photographs of Walsh holding a guitar in his hand, wearing a v-neck shirt and black blazer, the hipster essentials, I was expecting his music to sound a little less pop and more indie rock. I guess the saying, “don’t judge a book by its cover” applies here.

The surprise sound isn’t a bad thing. The best song on the album is the first track, “Unhappy Ending,” which is also one of the more catchier songs on the album. There are some strong ballads that are pretty and heartfelt like “Now or Never.” Walsh’s voice is as rich as the piano on this song, and as smooth as the melodies. He definitely gets extra points for playing his own instruments.

With the ballads also come the upbeat, fast songs. The album has a nice balance of both. You won’t get tired of the sappy love songs or the angry love songs as each track changes it up for listeners. One thing listeners will walk away from is the impression that Walsh has had his heart broken a few times.
